Guest Newsletter on Eye and Dental Clinic – Small Boat In A Big Ocean

Dear patients and friends,

This month, we are honoured to spotlight a remarkable new book written by one of our own patients, Sam: SMALL BOAT IN A BIG OCEAN. It is the true story of his granddaughter, Sorrelle, who was diagnosed with leukaemia at just ten months old, and the three-year journey that followed on the children’s oncology and bone marrow transplant wards at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

SMALL BOAT IN A BIG OCEAN is drawn from the journal entries Sam wrote while Sorrelle underwent treatment. It takes readers inside the day‑to‑day reality of life on a children’s oncology ward: the endless hours of waiting, the frightening uncertainty, the quiet courage of staff and families, and the unexpected moments of laughter that still break through. Publishing editors have praised the book as a work of honesty with a warm, personable voice, giving a clear, compassionate insight into the mental and physical challenges Sorrelle faced at such a young age, while allowing readers to form a deep emotional connection with her story.
