Bury Times // Bury grandad writes memoir after granddaughter’s cancer battle

A grandad has written a heartfelt memoir, which tells an emotional story of his granddaughter’s battle with cancer.

Sam Price, 61, from Lowercroft, has penned “Small boat in a big ocean” for his granddaughter Sorelle Turnbull, 10, who was diagnosed with infant acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when she was aged just 10 months old in 2015.

Sorelle was treated at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital for three years and underwent two bone marrow transplants and suffered kidney failure and sepsis and had part of her bowel removed.

But after coming through the treatment, she finally got to “ring the bell” in 2018.

While going through her treatment, Sam wrote daily updates in a private Facebook group for family and friends to see to keep them informed with her progress.

He said: “I would write in a private Facebook group messages updating family in this country and abroad how Sorelle was and her progress.

“I was trying, wherever I could, to be informative but not alarming, despite the fact there were obviously dark days.

“I always put a little caption and a picture of Sorelle that wasn’t an alarming one.”

He said that over the course of the years, those messages turned into 69,000 words and he started to think that maybe they could be turned into a book.
